CASEA ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING/
ACEAS ASSEMBLEE GENERALE ANNUELLE 2009
Carleton University
May 25, 2009
Vice-Presidents’/Program Co-Chairs’ Report
Matthew Meyer, Bonnie Stelmach

Greetings to CASEA members, including those who have participated in this year’s program and were unable to attend the conference.

Many thanks to members who contributed to the program by reviewing proposals. This year 72 reviewers contributed their time and expertise. All proposals were reviewed by 3 or 4 members. Members reviewed 3-4 proposals, and some accepted last minute additional proposals – we are very appreciative of your generosity!

CASEA membership this year was 162 as of December 2008. It is critically important that members register by submission deadline (November) so that we can secure time slots. CASEA was allotted 22 timeslots this year. The repertoire of research across CASEA is interestingly diverse. Organizing sessions thematically was a challenge. The 2009 CASEA program is composed of the following sessions/activities:

Presentations in French                       3
Multiple Paper Presentations              13
Symposia                                             7
Panel Discussions                                4
Roundtable Discussions                      6 (2 presentations at each table)
Poster Sessions                                    2
Conversations                         9

The program also includes a graduate student seminar, educational administration seminar, BELMAS seminar, book launch, and Greenfield Dissertation Award presentation. All provinces, but no territories, are participating in the program this year. As well, we are pleased to be joined by our international colleagues from the United Kingdom and the United States.

Two proposals were withdrawn pre-review; two colleagues withdrew their accepted presentations. Two paper proposals were rejected. Two requests were made to change paper presentations into roundtable discussions. Three proposals did not conform with the submission guidelines of three, double-spaced pages.

We focused on mentorship of graduate students this year.  We welcome 22 graduate students who are participating in the program this year. We hope that graduate students will feel welcomed into CASEA by being scheduled into sessions with senior scholars where possible, and having the opportunity to chair sessions.  Graduate students were also invited to review proposals. Might CASEA consider for next year providing an online tutorial of the reviewing process so that graduate students might feel supported in this process?

Another change this year was the elimination of discussants. We encourage members to provide feedback on this decision.

Special acknowledgement goes to graduate students Brenton Faubert, (University of Toronto), who organized the Graduate Seminar, Lisa Wright (University of Alberta), who assisted with catering, and Linda Cimpriç (University of Saskatchewan) who assisted with program organization. Preparation of the CASEA program, including the awards, special seminars, breakfast and banquet was made possible because of the contributions of members, the guidance of the Executive, as well as the assistance of colleagues, and undergraduate and graduate students who volunteered with enthusiasm. We extend thanks in all these directions.

Matt Meyer (St. Francis Xavier), First Vice-President and Program Co-Chair
Bonnie Stelmach (University of Saskatchewan), Second Vice-President and Program Co-Chair
