BONJOUR TOUT LE MONDE/ NEWS FROM YOUR PRESIDENT AND EXECUTIVE
Bonjour tout le monde/ACEAS/CASEA members. Comment ça va? In this second newsletter, it is a pleasure to provide the following review of ACEAS priorités/CASEA priorities for the 2009-2010 academic term and updates since the September newsletter. For those of you who had the chance to read the June or September 2009 newsletter/bulletin, you may find some repetition. I apologize in advance and remind you all that previous newsletters and other ACEAS/CASEA documents and reports can be located on the web page www.casea.org. Thanks again to Coral Mitchell and her colleagues at Brock University for maintaining this user-friendly webpage.
Priorities/priorités: In the September newsletter, the Executive presented to the CASEA/ACEAS membership the following priorites/priorités and directions for 2009-2010: Les défis/immediate challenges of CASEA/ACEAS will be to: continue to address issues around the number of members and membership participation in setting priorities and direction for the “work” of CASEA/ACEAS; continue to take up issues concerning the theoretical and practical balance between the managerial and leadership tasks of Educational Administration in the changing contexts of schools; and continue the strive to define our field of Educational Administration research and practice as it oscillates between action and reaction to current contemporary local, national, and global issues. We believe these priorities align with the theme for the 2010 CSSE/SCEE Conference/Congrès: Le savior branché / Connected Understanding.
Updates/les annonces:
- 2010 CASEA/ACEAS CONFERENCE: will be held May 28-June 1, 2010 during the CSSE/ACEAS Annual Conference at Concordia College in Montréal. * NB THE FOLLOWING TWO CHANGES: 1) The CSSE/SCEE Board of Directors made the decision in June 2009 to extend the 2010 Conference/Congrès based on the increase in number of pre-conference sessions other associations offer. Friday May 28, 2010will be a day devoted to pre-conference offerings. The 2010 4-day Conference/Congrès will run from Saturday May 29-Tuesday June 1. 2) NOTIFICATION OF ACCEPTANCE or REJECTION of submissions will occur at the end of January 2010 following the CSSE/SCEE Program Meeting in Montréal. - CCEAM: Ken Brien has included in this newsletter a reminder of the process for a Canadian institution to make application to host the 2014 CCEAM conference.
- CASEA/ACEAS ELECTIONS: Claire Lapointe will be communicating with the membership (through separate e-mail) soon regarding nominations and election of Executive officers for the 2010-2012 two year term and will report on the activities of the Comité des chercheurs/chercheuses francophones.
- CSSE/SCEE OCTOBER BOARD MEETING: The SCEE/CSSE Board of Directors met October 23-24, 2009 in Ottawa. Only one author (preferably the first author) of proposal submissions to the 2010 conference will be required to be CSSE/SCEE members. Vice-President Fernand Gervais, also CSSE/SCEE appointed member to the World Education Research Association (WERA) reported on the activities of this new organization and its founding member institutions and associations. Documents that he presented to the Board of Directors included: The Constitution, Three Year Program for Activities, and Representatives of Associations Attending the First Council Meeting, September 26-27, 2009 in Vienna, Austria. I requested electronic copies of these documents and received the following link to pass along for your consideration, and to support further informed discussion at our 2010 AGM in Montréal (http://www.weraonline.org). As you recall, at our May 25, 2009 ACEAS AGA/CASEA AGM, members passed a motion to request the Board of Directors re-consider the approval of their May 22, 2009 motion to provide funding for three years for SCEE/CSSE membership on the newly formed WERA (World Education Research Association). At that time and at the October meeting there was recognition that further consultation needs to occur between the Executive of the Board, its delegates, and the SCEE/CSSE membership as this three-year commitment unfolds. Executive Director Tim Howard reported he is working with the webpage people to have submission abstracts put on the CSSE/SCEE website as our membership requested at the May, 2009 AGM.
CJE (English) Editor: Julia Ellis has completed her term as CJE editor, and the call for applications for an English editor for CJE will come out in the near future.
Coutts Award: At the CSSE/SCEE Board of Directors meeting, association presidents were also asked to bring to the attention of members the criteria for application and nomination of individuals for the COUTTS AWARD. There have not been nominees this past couple of years. Criteria for the award are listed on the CSSE/SCEE website.
Nominations for President and 2nd Vice-President (Anglophone): There will be a call for nominations for these two positions on the CSSE/SCEE in the early New Year.
Federation and SSHRC: There is a continued emphasis and assumption on the part of these national funding bodies that knowledge mobilization leads to social innovation. There was also discussion of a change of the peer review process for SSHRC standard grants and other grants. The idea discussed here was that the review process of grant applications continues to be “protective” of the traditional academic career path, and does not necessarily support the emphasis on (and assumptions about) knowledge mobilization and social innovation as envisioned by current Federation and SSHRC officials and administration. SSHRC will be looking for a report of “success stories” to ensure interested audiences have proof of the contribution to social innovation that results from investment of SSHRC dollars in academic research. Chad Gaffold from SSHRC made the presentation. I found the following two comments he made to be food for thought and debate: He stated and I paraphrase – the world is dying for content. There is such a thirst for content. Chad invited us to send examples of “success stories” of SSHRC –funded research to him at: chad.gaffold@sshrc.ca.

NOUVELLES DE CCEAM
As reported in the September newsletter, at the direction of the CASEA AGM/ACEAS AGA, I contacted the Executive of the CCEAM to find out how to craft a proposal to bring the annual CCEAM conference to Canada in 2014. He indicated that business manager, Arlene Walsh, will send out a call for proposals by the end of 2009. In the meantime, it was recommended that we as an association make decisions concerning the following items that will need to be included in a formal proposal.
- Location and dates
- Name of a sponsoring organization (e.g., CASEA and possibly a local university) and a statement of support from both
- Theme
- Costs to participants, funding sources, and percentage return to CCEAM
- General program for the conference, including major speakers and visits to local educational organizations. N.B. There is a particular emphasis on the local visitation component
- Marketing and program planning
If your institution is interested in preparing the proposal and hosting CCEAM 2014, please contact me as soon as possible. As mentioned at the CASEA AGM, we need to make this decision very soon. Next steps – If the CASEA/ACEAS membership decides to submit a proposal, and I am assuming that decision was made at this year’s conference, we would need to form a planning committee as soon as possible. Please get in touch with me ASAP with your comments and ideas, and if you are interested in being part of the planning committee (kbrien1@unb.ca).

AWARDS UPDATE
CASEA/ACEAS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDS
It’s not too early to start thinking about possible nominees for our CASEA/ACESAS Distinguished Service Award. These awards are intended to recognize those who have had a career of distinguished service in the study of educational administration in Canada. Distinguished Service Awards are presented at the CASEA annual meeting. No more than two individuals may receive an award in any given year. Candidates for the award must be nominated by a department of educational administration (or other appropriate department if the nominating university has no educational administration unit). Candidates need not be nominated by their own institutions; any institution can file a nomination for any person thought to be meritorious. The nomination, signed by the administrative head of the nominating unit, must include:
- A complete CV for the candidate
- A written statement outlining the ways in which the candidate meets the criteria for the award
- Letters of support for the nomination from CASEA members from at least three other universities or educational agencies.
Further details on the process and criteria are found at www.casea.org. The deadline for submission of nomination packages to the selection committee chair is February 1, 2010.

THOMAS B GREENFIELD DISSERTATION AWARD
Submissions of Doctoral Dissertations in Educational Administration are invited for the award competition. The CASEA/ACAES Thomas B. Greenfield Award will be presented at the annual conference of the Canadian Society for the Study of Education. The recipient will be invited to present a paper based on his or her research at the CASEA conference. Travel expenses will be covered, in part, by the association.
Selection Criteria:
- Significance of the research problem,
- Conceptualization, design, and execution of the study,
- Potential for theory development, further research, and improved practice, and
- Relevance to the field of educational administration in Canada.
Eligibility requirements for the EdD or PhD degree in educational administration must have been completed during the calendar year prior to the conference or the degree must have been awarded during that period by a Canadian university.
Normally the dissertation is submitted by the supervisor; however, there is nothing to prevent an individual submitting his/her own work. A departmental screening, if there is one, is simply to ensure that the department is willing to submit the dissertation under its name. PhD submissions are not limited to one per department; this is the case only with the Master’s award but not the Greenfield. Submission of the entries: Applicants should submit one unbound copy of the dissertation together with a 2,500 to 3,000 word article (less references), giving an overview of the study to the chair of the dissertation award committee. Submissions must be received by the chair no later than February 1, 2010.

MARGARET HAUGHEY MASTERS AWARD
Submissions are invited for the CASEA/ACEAS Margaret Haughey Masters Award competition. Eligible works include Master's theses, projects, and graduating papers.
Requirements for the Master of Education degree must have been completed during the 2008 calendar year, or the degree must have been awarded during that period by a Canadian University. In assessing the theses, projects and papers submitted for the Margaret Haughey Master's Award, the following criteria will be used:
- Significance of the Topic to the Field
- Rigour and Relevance of the Conceptual framework:
- Methodological Design
- Significance and Coherence of the Conclusions
- Writing Quality and Organization of the Work
Please note that normally only two submissions will be accepted per department, so faculty should consult with colleagues prior to nominating a candidate for this award. A letter of nomination from the advisor of the eligible work or department chair, together with a single unbound copy of the thesis, project, or graduating paper should be forwarded to the chair of the committee no later than February 1, 2010.
