L’ACEAS/CASEA CONFERENCE 2009
Collègues/colleagues,
Merci/thank you to those of you who alerted us about program changes. The final program is scheduled for early May. Please check La SCEE/ CSSE website for updates.
L’ACEAS/CASEA is experimenting with a couple of ideas this year:
- Sessions will be chaired, but there are no discussants.
- In the interest of efficiency with time, we would like to have PowerPoint presentations installed on the laptops at Carleton so that presenters do not have to spend time doing this. If you are able, please e-mail your PowerPoint presentation to Bonnie Stelmach bonnie.stelmach@usask.ca by May 19th. Please name it by your last name and the Room # in which your presentation is scheduled. Example: StelmachTory202. Bring a memory stick with your presentation just in case!
We look forward to seeing you/On veut vous voir at Carleton University during la SCEE/CSSE, May 23- 26, 2009.
Merci beaucoup/thanks again,
Bonnie Stelmach and Matthew Meyer (Program Co-Chairs)

LES NOUVELLES/MESSAGE FROM THE GRADUATE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE – Brenton Faubert
As part of this year’s l’ACEAS/CASEA program, graduate student representative Brenton Faubert has led up the organization of the session titled: Next Steps - What can graduate students do to better prepare for a career in education research? This session is scheduled May 24, 10:00 - 11:15 AM.
Guest speakers are:
Dr. Carol Campbell - Director of the Education Research and Evaluation Strategy Branch, with the Ontario Ministry of Education
Bruce Campbell - Executive Director of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives
Dr. Bob Macmillan - Associate Dean (Graduate Programs and Research), University of Western Ontario
Questions to be addressed include: Does having a career in government cut you off from the academic sphere? What are the working conditions involved in doing consulting work? How does one go about securing tenure at a faculty of education? Three guests have been invited to speak to graduate students to answer these and other questions they may have about preparing for a career conducting research in a government, think tank or faculty environment. Each of the speakers will answer some common questions about their respective organization (i.e., working hours, type of work), followed by break-out groups so graduate students can ask their own questions directly to the speakers. The event will include breakfast. Graduate students (from CASEA and other associations) are welcomed to attend.
Faculty members, please pass this message along to your graduate students. Those students interested can register for the workshop by e-mailing Brenton at: bfaubert@oise.utoronto.ca
