CCEAM Report
Ken Brien

In August 2008, the CASEA Executive appointed me to succeed Tim Goddard as our representative on the CCEAM International Board for a four-year term. I had the pleasure of attending the CCEAM Biennial Board meeting held during the 2008 conference in September 2008 in Durban, South Africa. CCEAM has just over 2000 members in 32 countries, including 25 Commonwealth countries. CASEA members are also members of CCEAM. It was a fascinating experience to sit around the Board table with colleagues from such diverse places as Namibia, Uganda, Papua New Guinea, India, Cyprus, South Africa, as well as Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

CCEAM is the publisher of the journal International Studies in Educational Administration (ISEA), currently edited by Jackie Lumby and Nick Foskett of the UK. Discussion about ISEA included the improvement in the quality and the delivery schedule under the current editors and printing company in Cyprus. With 39 institutional subscriptions, there is a need for members to encourage more libraries to carry ISEA in order to attract a commercial publisher to take over the journal. The contract with the current printing company in Cyprus expired in December 2008.

The current president, elected at the CCEAM Biennial General Meeting for a four-year term, is Ms. Zandile Kunene, Executive Director of the Matthew Goniewe School of Leadership and Governance (MGSLG), an agency of the Gauteng Department of Education in South Africa. Her term began officially on Jan. 1, 2009. Arlene Walsh was recently appointed as the CCEAM Business Manager.

The next CCEAM conference will be held from Sept. 29 to Oct. 1, 2010, in Sydney, Australia. Since it will be held in conjunction with the annual conference of the Australian Council for Education Leaders (ACEL), as many as 1200 delegates are expected to attend. The 2012 CCEAM conference has been awarded to Cyprus. There was a request from the CCEAM Executive about whether Canada would be willing to host a future conference. The last time that we hosted the CCEAM conference was in 1994 in Toronto. The conference typically attracts 300 – 400 delegates from all over the Commonwealth as well as the United States and certain European countries. I have suggested to the CASEA Executive that we consider submitting a bid to host a future conference, perhaps in 2014. If CASEA were to undertake to bid, it is worth noting that the host affiliates for 2006 and 2008 hired outside companies to manage the conference (e.g., registration, accommodation, venues, technology, programs, etc.) so that the local affiliate could focus on academic matters.

A group of CCEAM members met during the conference to explore some shared research plans. There is a proposal to devise a CCEAM research project related to gender and educational administration. Jackie Lumby of the University of Southampton is a contact person for this work.
