CASEA Newsletter, Fall 2008, Issue 1

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT/BONJOUR TOUT LE MONDE

I hope that everyone has had an excellent beginning to the 2008-2009 academic term.  In response to feedback received at the June 1, 2008 Annual General Meeting of CASEA/ACEAS in Vancouver, the incoming executive decided to send out regular newsletters to keep the membership abreast of important information and upcoming events. This is the first of four newsletters that I will put together and send out on behalf of the executive. Lisa Wright, a CASEA member and doctoral student at the University of Alberta will act as co-editor. Please note as well that the CASEA/ACEAS website is being updated (www.casea.org). Matthew Meyer and I will work with Coral Mitchell to make sure that the website has up to date information.
J’aimerais remercier Claire Lapointe et son comité exécutif. ACEAS/CASEA 2008 à Vancouver a été un événement formidable! Special thanks to outgoing 2007-2008 executive members Helen Armstrong and David Mackinnon. Et bienvenue aux nouveaux membres. Once again, your CASEA/ACEAS executive members are: Claire Lapointe (Past-President); Matthew Meyer (1st Vice President); Bonnie Stelmach (2nd Vice President); Dawn Wallin (Treasurer); and Brenton Faubert (Graduate Student Representative). Committee chairs for 2008-2009 are: Dawn Wallin continuing as Chair of the Greenfield Dissertation Committee; Paul Newton taking over from Randy Wimmer as  Chair of the Margaret Haughey Masters Award Committee; Ken Brien remaining on as Chair of the Distinguished Service Award Committee, and taking over from Tim Goddard as CASEA/ACEAS Representative on the CCEAM Board of Directors; Lyse Langlois taking over from Matthew Meyer as Representative on the CJE Board of Directors; and Roseline Garon as Representative on the New Scholars’ Fund Advisory Board. Contact information for the executive members can be found in the next section of this newsletter and on the CASEA/ACEAS web page (www.casea.org).
Comme vous savez mes collègues (as you all know), the CASEA/ACEAS 2009 Conference will be held May 23-26, 2009 during the CSSE/SCEE Annual Conference at Carleton University in Ottawa. The theme is Capital Connections: Nation, Terroir, Territoire. Submission of proposals can now be made through the CSSE/SCEE website (www.csse.ca). Closing date is November 12, 2008. More information to follow from Bonnie Stelmach; 2nd Vice President and Co-Chair of the 2009 program.
Rosemary Foster

In recognition of the amount of work it requires to assemble our CASEA/ACEAS program, the executive has decided to try, as a pilot project, a re-division of tasks shared by the president and two vice presidents. In brief:

President (Rosemary Foster) will assume major responsibility for the banquet and catering with the assistance of a CASEA/ACEAS member volunteer (David Burgess).

1st Vice President (Matthew Meyer) will: Organize the CASEA/ACEAS Seminar; Work with the Grad Student Representative (Brenton Faubert) to organize a Grad Student Seminar; Serve as a 3rd reviewer on all proposal submissions and assist in scheduling the program; Attend the Program Directors’ Meeting in Ottawa in January; Issue the call for chairs for all the sessions; Work with Webmaster (Coral Mitchell) to maintain an up to date CASEA/ACEAS website; Arrange for free conference registrations for retirees who have been CASEA/ACEAS members for 15 years or longer; Arrange for publicity and photography during and following the conference.

2nd Vice President (Bonnie Stelmach) will: Organize and issue the call for proposals and conversation sessions; Manage the review process and take chief responsibility for scheduling of the program; Be in contact with members over the course of assembling the program.

Merci à l’avance/thanks in advance for your support of what we are calling our “Distributed Leadership Initiative”. The executive will report on this pilot project and make recommendations regarding possible changes to the constitution and by-laws at the 2009 Annual General Meeting.

CASEA PRIORITES/ACEAS PRIORITES 2008-2009

Based on feedback received at the 2008 Annual General Meeting, the executive has set the following priorities:

  • Comité des Francophones. Claire Lapointe va l’organiser. The purpose of this committee will be to encourage more Francophone colleagues to join and participate in CASEA/ACEAS. The next three CASEA/ACEAS conferences are in bilingual cities (Carelton, Concordia, UNB). C’est le bon moment!
  • Involve the Graduate Student Representative in scheduling of CASEA/ACEAS program so that graduate student presenters are paired with more experienced scholars who can provide mentorship. Brenton Faubert will work with Bonnie Stelmach on this.
  • Offer a free conference registration to retired colleagues who prior to retirement had been a CASEA/ACEAS member for 15 years or longer. Matthew Meyer will head up this initiative.
  • Keep the Conversation Sessions and sharpen the criteria and review process. See the website for summaries of some of last year’s very interesting conversation sessions (www.casea.org). Stay tuned. Bonnie Stelmach will forward an update on the conversation sessions.
  • Keep the CASEA/ACEAS website up to date. Matthew Meyer will work with Coral Mitchell.
  • Do away with discussants at CASEA/ACEAS sessions and provide more specific duties for the Chairs. Matthew Meyer will lead in this initiative.
  • Keep the banquet. Rosemary Foster will be in touch. GOOD NEWS! CASEA/ACEAS did not lose money on the banquet! Thanks to Matthew Meyer for smart negotiations.

CSSE BOARD MEETING, June 3, 2008

Rosemary Foster represented CASEA/ACEAS at the June 3, 2008 meeting of the CSSE board. In-coming President, Kathy Sanford, chaired the meeting and outlined the following as issues to be taken up by the CSSE Board in the 2008-2009 academic year: Adult and Higher Education and Knowledge Mobilization. The representative from SSHRC indicated that this year there would be targeted funding available for research proposals addressing questions about the environment and the North.

In terms of policy, the CSSE is taking up issues around research ethics. It was indicated that copyright legislation is changing.

Future CSSE Conferences that have been confirmed: 2009 Carleton; 2010 Concordia; 2011 University of New Brunswick and St. Thomas University; 2012 University of Waterloo and Sir Wilfred Laurier University.

The next CSSE Board Meeting will be held in Ottawa, October 17-18. Rosemary Foster will attend and report back to the membership following that meeting.

AWARDS UPDATE

CASEA/ACEAS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDS

It’s not too early to start thinking about possible nominees for our CASEA/ACESAS Distinguished Service Award. These awards are intended to recognize those who have had a career of distinguished service in the study of educational administration in Canada. Distinguished Service Awards are presented at the CASEA annual meeting. No more than two individuals may receive an award in any given year.
Candidates for the award must be nominated by a department of educational administration (or other appropriate department if the nominating university has no educational administration unit). Candidates need not be nominated by their own institutions; any institution can file a nomination for any person thought to be meritorious. The nomination, signed by the administrative head of the nominating unit, must include:

  • A complete CV for the candidate
  • A written statement outlining the ways in which the candidate meets the criteria for the award
  • Letters of support for the nomination from CASEA members from at least three other universities or educational agencies.

Further details on the process and criteria are found at www.casea.org. The deadline for submission of nomination packages to the selection committee chair is February 1, 2009.

Ken Brien, Chair, Distinguished Service Award Committee

THOMAS B GREENFIELD DISSERTATION AWARD
Submissions of Doctoral Dissertations in Educational Administration are invited for the award competition. The CASEA/ACAES Thomas B. Greenfield Award will be presented at the annual conference of the Canadian Society for the Study of Education. The recipient will be invited to present a paper based on his or her research at the CASEA conference. Travel expenses will be covered, in part, by the association.

Selection Criteria:
   1.Significance of the research problem,
2.Conceptualization, design, and execution of the study,
3.Potential for theory development, further research, and improved practice, and
4.Relevance to the field of educational administration in Canada.
Eligibility requirements for the EdD or PhD degree in educational administration must have been completed during the calendar year prior to the conference or the degree must have been awarded during that period by a Canadian university.
Normally the dissertation is submitted by the supervisor; however, there is nothing to prevent an individual submitting his/her own work. A departmental screening, if there is one, is simply to ensure that the department is willing to submit the dissertation under its name. PhD submissions are not limited to one per department; this is the case only with the Master’s award but not the Greenfield.
Submission of the entries: Applicants should submit one unbound copy of the dissertation together with a 2,500 to 3,000 word article (less references), giving an overview of the study to the chair of the dissertation award committee. Submissions must be received by the chair no later than February 1, 2009.
Dawn Wallin, Chair, T B Greenfield Dissertation Award Committee

MARGARET HAUGHEY MASTERS AWARD
Submissions are invited for the CASEA/ACEAS Margaret Haughey Masters Award competition. Eligible works include Master's theses, projects, and graduating papers. Requirements for the Master of Education degree must have been completed during the 2008 calendar year, or the degree must have been awarded during that period by a Canadian University.

In assessing the theses, projects and papers submitted for the Margaret Haughey Master's Award, the following criteria will be used:
1.Significance of the Topic to the Field
2.Rigour and Relevance of the Conceptual framework:
3.Methodological Design
4.Significance and Coherence of the Conclusions
5.Writing Quality and Organization of the Work

Please note that normally only two submissions will be accepted per department, so faculty should consult with colleagues prior to nominating a candidate for this award. A letter of nomination from the advisor of the eligible work or department chair, together with a single unbound copy of the thesis, project, or graduating paper should be forwarded to the chair of the committee no later than February 1, 2009.

Paul Newton, Chair, Margaret Haughey Masters Award Committee.
