At the end of 2002, membership in CASEA stood at 118 members, which was a
decrease of 8 members from the 2001 total. The loss was primarily in numbers
of graduate students, with the number of regular members showing an increase
of 5 members. We expect membership numbers to increase as a result of a recruitment
drive being held across Canada during 2003.
CASEA's annual conference was a resounding success, with 72 paper, round-table,
or poster presentations in 29 sessions. Congratulations for an outstanding
program are extended to the Program Chair, David MacKinnon (Acadia), Program
Co-Chair, Claire Lapointe (Moncton), the 28 CASEA members who served as
proposal reviewers, and the 102 presenters.
One of the highlights of the program is the Annual CASEA Seminar, which
showcases the work of senior scholars who have made extensive contributions
to Canadian scholarship in educational administration. The seminar theme
for 2003 was Leadership for Social Justice, and the invited scholars
were Cecilia Reynolds (OISE/UT) speaking on gender equity, Carolyn Shields
(UBC) on poverty and social class, and Patrick Solomon (York) on race and
anti-racist education.
Another highlight was an invited presentation by two representatives from
the British Educational Leadership, Management, and Administration Society,
Nigel Bennett from the Open University in Milton Keynes, UK, and Helen
Johnson from Roehampton University of Surrey. Other international presenters
included Anita Trnavcevic and Nada Trunk Sirca from the Koper School of
Management in Slovenia and Roger Wilson from Michigan State University
in Grand Valley, MI.
Members of CASEA and CASWE continued a three-year tradition of sponsoring
a joint book launch and wine-and-cheese reception with which to honour
the scholarly productivity of our members. Since the 2002 annual conference,
6 books from CASEA members and 4 from CASWE members have been published,
and CASEA is extremely proud of this accomplishment.
Several awards were presented at CASEA 2003. The recipient of the T. B.
Greenfield Dissertation Award was Dr. Brenda Beattie (OISE/UT) for her
dissertation entitled Emotion Matters in Educational Leadership: Examining
the Unexamined. Dr. Beattie's work was supervised by Andy Hargreaves
(OISE/UT). The Dissertation Award Committee was chaired by Joe Fris (U
of A), supported by Lynn Bosetti (U of C) and Andy Hargreaves (OISE/UT).
Dr. Beattie presented an overview of her research at the annual T. B. Greenfield
Dissertation Presentation immediately following the AGM.
Also announced at the AGTM was the recipient of the Master’s Award,
Mr. Shawn Northfield (StFX). He won the award for his work entitled Teachers’ Perceptions
of Principals’ Succession. His advisor was Robert Macmillan (StFX).
The Master’s Award Committee was chaired by Carol Harris (UVic) and
included Janice Wallace (U of A) and Matt Meyers (StFX).
This year, the CASEA Distinguished Service Award was presented to Dr.
Derek Allison (UWO), who has been instrumental in advancing the interests
and development of CASEA in many ways over the years. The Distinguished
Service Award Committee was chaired by Larry Sackney (U of S) and included
Margaret Haughey (U of A) and Linda LaRocque (SFU). Tim Goddard (U of C)
presented the award at the Annual CASEA Banquet on Friday evening, May
30, which was attended by 72 members and guests.
During the 2002-2003 academic year, CASEA members participated in a number
of international conferences. Margaret Haughey (U of A) and Veronica Bohac-Clarke
(U of C) presented the annual CASEA session at the BELMAS conference in
England in October 2002, and Beth Young (U of A), Mary Brooks (U of A),
Janice Wallace (U of A), and Barry Anderson (BC Ministry) presented the
annual CSSE session at AERA in April 2003. Larry Sackney (U of S) provided
a stimulating discussion for the AERA presentation.
Respectfully submitted by Coral Mitchell (Brock), CASEA President
